The mission of the Mastic Beach Hebrew Center Sisterhood is to help develop a sense of community within the congregation and among Jewish families in the greater Brookhaven area. We do that by coordinating a myriad of social, educational, and community outreach programs throughout the year.
Social and recreational activities include the annual Yom Kippur Break Fast — a scrumptious pot luck feast — a yearly summer picnic at Southaven County Park, bingo nights throughout the year, and a community seder at Passover.
Making learning fun is another mission of the Sisterhood, and we do that by collaborating with the Hebrew School to organize the annual Hanukkah Party, the Purim Carnival, and a Model Passover Seder, to name just a few.
The Sisterhood recognizes that its mission goes well beyond the walls of the temple. We support many community-based organizations and not-for-profits such as the local food pantry. We support national and worldwide relief efforts, such as those which helped the victims of the September 11, 2001 tragedy. And we work with the grassroots organization "Books for Israel" by adopting a community in the Jewish state where we send English language books for their libraries, many of which have gone under-funded due to Israel's security budget needs.
Life can be very busy — we understand — so we welcome you wholeheartedly at whatever participation level suits your life. The only requirement is that you care about the future and well being of this wonderful and dynamic temple community.
